Research Question

My research question is whether or not there is a cure for depression, and if there is not, what is the most effective way to live a long and healthy life with depression.

My gut reaction is that even though there are drugs and treatments available, there is no flat out cure. There will be good days and bad days and you just have to grit your teeth, buckle down and wait out the bad times. I think that medicine can help, but I also feel like there is only a limited time it can help before you need to move on to another drug because it is no longer effective enough. When someone has an addiction to hardcore drugs there is a saying that they are never recovered, only recovering. I feel like depression is the same way, you are never cured, only coping.

I think that other people's viewpoints will vary depending on how much they know, how they were raised and how closely they've interacted with someone who has depression. For example, I grew up with my parents telling me that therapy and mental disorders were for rich white people and that they would create more problems than they'd solve. Then when my sister had her second suicide attempt they came to see therapy as a godsend and antidepressants as a lifesaver. I know of some people who think that depression is just something you label yourself with to gain attention and others who have friends or family affected by it that recognize it as a true illness.

I would like to research the different types of drugs available for depression and see how much they work over long periods of time. I'd like to see how quickly a person can become immune to the effects of the drugs and how much immunity it would take to be switched to a different medication. I'd also like to find statistics on how much therapy can actually help a person with depression and I would like to see the difference between someone who has been institutionalized for depression versus someone who hasn't.

  1. I like that you are writing about something that you have experience with. Some advice would be to make sure you take a step back as you are doing your research so you can see all sides, that way you can write a good argument. Things you would like to research is quite broad so as you start to look up the information about different medicine maybe narrow it down a little bit so you can find strong supporting statements.

  2. I think this is a very interesting topic that many people commonly struggle with. Although I don't have much experience with depression or dealing with those that do, I think that it can be cured with things other than drugs. I do understand it to be a disease, but think that with the proper treatment, people can overcome it. It my psychology class, we recently discussed a form of treatment called the triangle treatment. The idea behind this is that if you think you're happy, act like you're happy that eventually you'll be happy. I know it may seem a little silly, but I completely believe this is a possible treatment and that it could possibly cure the depression for those that really want to cure it. I think that you should try and do a little more research on alternatives besides medication for treating depression. Perhaps you may find there are other long term treatments that would allow those dealing with it to live without medications or less medications.

  3. I think this is a very strong topic to research and also seems that perhaps through researching this topic it could also benefit communication within your family in dealing with depression. Many people fight with bouts of depression at different points in their lives but clinical depression is a much more serious topic and often times does require medical intervention for a person to see that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I also agree with Sierra that this is a very large topic and it might be a good idea to see if you can find a smaller question within the subject because there are so many different components to this topic and it may be difficult to cover all of them. It sounds as though you are not a huge fan of the conventional drug treatment methods and their long-term side-effects/benefits, so I think one possibility would be to research alternative treatments like acupuncture, exercise, and herbal therapies to name a few. I think that Katy's suggestion of the triangle treatment ties in with concepts from quantum physics also following the science that you can actually re-train the receptors in your brain to positive ways of thinking through diligent practice. Meaning that the more that you think you're happy, you actually create more receptors in your brain for feelings of joy and happiness. I'm looking forward to seeing how your research progresses. Good luck!

  4. Depression is very real and very difficult. I say this as a person that has battled depression myself. Depression is a very dark place and very real for the person that is experiencing it. You brought up a good point in your blog is there a cure for depression. My opinion is NO, medication, counseling and etc may help but may never cure it. I would like to find out more information on the different type of cures and the effects they have had on their patients. What are the most effective cures and what may lead to future depression? Great Blog!

  5. I myeslf battle depression, so I know how this goes. I am on medication for it, and it has helped me. I don't want to give credit to the medication, because I also feel like I have been opening up and growing and learning how to be happy more and more on my own. However, I also was seeing a therapist for a very long time and that helped, too. I grew up as a very shy person and I didn't like to share how I was feeling with anyone, so when my parents would try to take me to therapists as a child I refused. I went through so many, that when I became a depressed and anxious adult I didn't want to see a therapist because of my bad connections with all the previous ones.
Anyway, what I'm getting at, is that therapy and medicine can help. I want to tell you that there is no cure for depression. There is no magic pill that changes everything, and no advice from a therapist that will cure it all. It is a long battle with yourself and your feelings. And there will be days where you still don't want to get out of bed, and there will be days where everything seems like it's just wonderful. Depression is a massive part of my life. I am really excited to follow your blog and see where it goes from here. I'd love to read what you find for how people to live long lives with depression.
